The Greenland elections turned out to be a great victory for independence. The independence parties can organize a coalition and work towards independence from Denmark. Greenland was de facto independent for all internal matters, only foreign policy and defense were decided in Kopenhagen. The Trump Administration understood the mood of Greenland’s population, their drive for complete independence from old Denmark. What Donald Trump can offer to Greenlanders is the US passport and a lot of money for developing all the promising natural resources of Greenland. “We need Greenland for national security. One way or the other we’re gonna get it,” Donald Trump said. It is a strong statement and a huge challenge for keeping an eye on international law. It will need some kind of cooperation of the population in Greenland, a peaceful transfer and Denmark might have the last say.
