BBC, compared to other, more aggressive war pushing media outlets (like The Guardian) is approaching the unilateral Russia Easter ceasefire with a more careful view.
The BBC outlines that before Russian President ordered the unilateral Easter ceasefire, there were many discussions between US and Russian diplomats and envoys. Even most lately, the US Foreign Secretary Rubio has had a phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, right after the unsatisfactory meeting between the US, European and Ukrainian delegations in Paris. The outcome of that meeting was a statement of Rubio that if “the parties are not willing to make peace fast, the US will withdraw from the Ukrainian war scenario”. Rubio’s statement was confirmed by President Trump who said therafter that “if the two parties do not rapidly agree to peace, their US will give a pass”.
The Western press has speculated a lot what those statements mean and to whom they adress. It was speculated that the statements addressed solely to the European and Ukrainian sides in view of their obstructions to Trump’s peace efforts.
Now, the BBC suggests that the unilateral Russian ceasefire did not come by surprise, not at all for the Trump Administration and that it is, indeed a US and Russian coordinated move to force Ukraine and also finally the Europeans to concede to peace.
Putin, with no surprise to Trump, has shown his willingness and capability to stop the killing. While V Selensky is loudly pointing to alleged ceasefire breaks, Ukraine’s top commander said that there were absolutely no air attacks during the Russian unilateral ceasefire.
Yes, it may have been good for Russia’s image to demonstrate a human approach over Easter, and it may have been agreed with US. It is, for that, a convincing instrument to bring the Europeans to reason not to continue Biden’s War, and foremost, not to send European troops to Ukraine. Ukraine will have to submit, either to the US or to Europe, while Russia, as Trump said earlier, has “all cards in their hands”. There is no other way around, if the parties want to deescalate, than they need to consider Putin’s demands and to try to negotiate as much as possible in their favor. It shall be done at the earliest possibility so that no further lives are lost in this senseless Biden’s War.
