US interest in Greenland may be misunderstood. Greenland is not part of the EU, but an Associated EU Territory giving its inhabitants EU rights. Greenland has a history of getting independent from Denmark and the EU … nevertheless, there was no movement to become part of the USA until recently. Donald Trump may take Greenland as an instrument of coercion against the EU, but the US may also having the geo-strategic interest not to have a large territory belonging to another block near to US mainland. Finally, with Greenland the US’ arctic domain can be extended, with huge natural resources. A forceful appropriation of Greenland by the US would make Russia’s “liberation” of parts of Ukraine look like a justified operation.
