Bill to save British Steel plant becomes Law after HM the King’s Approval – The Guardian

What a story.

In an urgent operation, the Starmer Labour Government intervened to save a British Steel plant. The plant is owned by Chinese group Jingye. Emergency legislation was enacted by Parliament to give the government the power to instruct British Steel to keep the Santhorpe plant open. The law passed the Commons and Lords in a single day unopposed.

The Labour Ministers had taken the unusual action of recalling parliament from its Easter recess to sit on Saturday after negotiations with British Steel’s Chinese owners, Jingye, appeared to break down.

Britain is in a very difficult situation. The Steel industry is a heavy burden for the budget and certainly not climate friendly. But it is also of national interest to keep the industry alive in Britain. It may also be a question of national security.

But it is of no understanding why the British Steel group was given earlier into the hands of China.

The books of the steel plant show losses of £230 million last year, and amount which will have to be paid by the UK Government.

Conservative news accuses PM Starmer that he saved the steel plant only to keep the votes for Labour – steel workers are traditionally Labour voters but may switch to Reform UK.
