CheckpointNews’ Statement to Trump’s Jeddah Achievement: 30-days of Ceasefire

Donald Trump made it possible that Ukraine (and its European allies) accepted a 30-days ceasefire. It is now up to Russia to consider a ceasefire – so that the ceasefire can start with immediate effect. In the meantime, the US restarts providing intelligence and military aid to Ukraine. That is the official statement from Ukraine/US after today’s Jeddah meeting.
So far, things seem to continue as before, Ukraine will fight and retreat, will receive weapons, money and intelligence – and Russia will push forward and is under public pressure to comply with demands for a ceasefire. But Donald Trump has achieved to re-impose US authority over Ukraine and possibly over Europe. So far, so good. But what’s new? What’s next? What can Trump offer to Putin for a ceasefire?
The public opinion in the US and Europe is furthermore convinced that the Russian side is not trustworthy and may not abide to a ceasefire. This is anther problem for a ceasefire.
It will be Donald Trump to be forever remembered for his achievement to bring peace to Ukraine – the Nobel Peace Price is for sure. The ceasefire is a first step.
An immediate ceasefire is the best what can happen to Ukraine as it is just about to collapse. Therefore, it was not so hard to convince Ukraine to return under US leadership and to accept all US ceasefire demands in exchange for full support. An immediate ceasefire is not optimal for Russia as its war targets are not reached and Russia is winning on the battlefield. A compromise will be Russia’s step forward for peace and a ceasefire at this very moment would be Russia’s offer and concession. But what will Russia agree to, what will be Russia’s ceasefire conditions – considering Russia’s known and clear demands and conditions for a ceasefire, unchanged since 2024?
It is now President Trump’s duty to negotiate with President Putin about the conditions of a ceasefire – hopefully very soon – and return to Europe and Ukraine to realize a deal. Trump can be an honest broker between the Biden/Obama war league (and its European followers) and Russia and make it one important matter for him to survive politically. He plays huge, but can win even more.
As explained before, in the meantime most probably nothing will change.
