UK PM Starmer has developed a plan for sending European troops to Ukraine. In view of the US’ unwillingness to send troops, followed by Poland, Italy and Germany, there might not be available much to do. It seems that PM Starmer’s plan is to send mainly British and French troops, less than 30’000 soldiers. Acknowledging that this small contingent cannot engage with Russia, the mission will be to stay in the background and to employ aircraft and ships to secure the airspace and coastline. It is expected that Donald Trump will not guarantee this mission under NATO art. 5. As well, Russia declared that it will not accept NATO troops in Ukraine and will consider them as targets. Under such conditions, sending 30’000 soldiers to Ukraine is a suicide mission. And a risk for a much larger conflict engaging NATO members. As before, the interest of Ukraine’s leadership is to engage NATO or European countries directly in the conflict. It is easy to imaging that, in case NATO troops will be deployed on the territory of Ukraine to secure a ceasefire, Ukraine may provoke a retaliation from Russia where NATO troops will be involved as well. Therefore, the presence of NATO troops in Ukraine will be for Ukraine an incentive to break the ceasefire. It is very understandable that Russia will not agree with NATO or European troops in Ukraine.
