The DailyMail and many other news outlets report that V Selensky “opted to leave Jeddah before today’s discussions with the US delegation even began, choosing instead to leave the fate of his nation to a trio of top aides led by presidential adviser Andriy Yermak.”
It is always essential to send the right people to a negotiation and also a matter of reciprocal respect to the opposite party at the negotiation table.
Appointing Yermak as the head of the Ukrainian delegation seems a missed chance for a positive negotiation environment.
Yermak was one of the key figures in Donald Trump’s first impeachment orchestrated by the Democrats together with the Ukrainian leadership and acts today on many levels together with other Ukrainian figures against Trump.
The DailyMail concludes that “now, as Yermak takes charge of ceasefire negotiations, his presence at the table could well inflame tensions at a critical moment and may even jeopardise Kyiv’s chances of securing a favourable peace deal.”
