The Guardian reports: “Initial projections after polling stations closed on Sunday showed George Simion, whose far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) began as an anti-vax movement during the pandemic, comfortably in the lead on between 30% and 33% of the vote.”
The two highest-scoring candidates are scheduled to face each other in a second-round run-off on 18 May.
Originally Candidate Georgescu won the 1st round of the presidential elections in 2024. Georgescu was accused by Romania’s secret services to have benefitted from Russia’s election intervention and was thereafter barred from being candidate again. In his place the now favorite Simion has won the 1st round. Simion declared he will appoint Georgescu Prime Minister if he will win the presidential elections on 18 May.
Georgescu and Simion are outspoken critics of NATO, EU and the war in Ukraine. If Simion will win the elections, another EU country will stand up against the EU’s regime and will oppose to further military support of Ukraine.
