The news outlet Forbes uses strong words against Steve Witkoff, Donald Trump’s Envoy for Peace Negotiations with Russia. Forbes writes that Witkoff has a lack of knowledge, that he is imposing an unfavorable deal on Ukraine, that he repeats talking points of Russia … Importandly, Witkoff told CNN in February 2025 that Russia’s invasion into Ukraine was provoked – “that it was not necessarily provoked by Russia” – therefore, Witkoff is blaming other powers that provoked Russia to invade Ukraine. Other leaders before Witkoff expressed the same views, inclusive the Pope who said already in 2022 that NATO “barking” in front of the Russian door step provoked Russia’s incursion into Ukraine … Indeed, there is a move to prepare the ground for a compromise between the US and Russia. As Foreign Secretary Rubio already explained, Ukraine is nothing but a proxy of the US – confirming that the war in Ukraine is a proxy war of the US. As consequence, the US shall have the full liberty to handle this war and to end it at conditions which are reasonable from the point of view of the US. The reality behind this sudden US turn-around is that the new President Trump wants to terminate the misguided policies of the Obama/Biden administrations in relation to Ukraine, to terminate the proxy war or to terminate Project Ukraine as the whole set-up for a NATO expansion, from the 2014 regime change to the 2022 war is called. Trump simply does not see a benefit for the US in continuing Project Ukraine and wants to get out of it as fast and at as little costs as possible. This may not please the Ukrainian elites who have banked on an eternal support of the US. As well, European countries seem to be unhappy about a US-Russia negotiated peace as they fear important consequences from Ukraine, such as further migration to the EU, huge rebuilding costs and extreme future expenses from an association or admision of Ukraine to the EU. For Europe it’s mainly a cost matter, for the US as well. For the Ukrainian elite a question of physical survival. The US will have to reunite all those positions and to find the adequate compromise with Russia – whereas Donald Trump already admitted that Russia has all cards in its hands.
