German Chancellor Merz surprises the World by saying that “Israel is doing the dirty work for us.”
This expression is rather a diplomatic faux-pas. Israel has been stating since long that Iran is pushing for its own nuclear bomb. Israel considers that its existence is in danger and millions of Israelis, Jews and Palestinians alike could be wiped out once Iran has the bomb.
It is not “dirty work”, it is a fight for the survival of Israel. And it is certainly not “our”, German work.
The Middle East, since WWI, has not found its peace. Colonial and post-colonial interests were disturbing its settlement, oil and resources are in the center of conflicts, regime changes and revolutions regularly happen under foreign influence. The Palestinian question has not found a solution. The short period of relative peace and stability between Camp David and the Arab Spring has abruptly stopped. The US and Western run Arab Spring was designed to topple the regimes in Egypt, Libya, Syria, Tunisia and finally, but forcefully Iran. Irak and Afghanistan were toppled forcefully before. Iran is the last of those countries in the region that resisted to foreign imposed changes.
None of the aforementioned countries were free and democratic. None of those countries will become a real democracy – according to Western standards – not in generations. In fact, those countries seem to return to a status ante, such as Afghanistan, Syria and eventually Egypt, while others are still in turmoil and chaos: such as Libya, Irak.
Merz may have also in mind that the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran has regional and global consequences. Israel seemingly is not able to give a final blow to the Mullah Regime and is afraid that Iran may very soon, if not in weeks, obtain the bomb or a similar device which Iran’s super-sonic missiles can deliver to Israel. The US is aware of it and knows about the time constraints. It’s a run against time and therefore, the current huge military build-up of the US is understandable. The US not only is threatening but is fully prepared to hit Iran with its full force. It will be terrible for the Iranian people and thousands will die under the combined US Israeli fire. Iran may not be able to retaliate, but will the bombing be enough to wipe out the Iranian regime? Will it stop the construction of a nuclear device or will it incite revenge on large scale?
Iran can be bombed, can be destroyed from the air, but hardly invaded or occupied. It is not Irak or Afghanistan, Iran has a huge and powerful army, and, so far, a religious leadership that is supported and feared by its people. Unleashing the full might of US bombs on Iran will eventually damage the Iranian state, industry, oil and resources, but may also have important and long lasting effects on the rest of the World.
If the conflict with Iran escalates and takes a long time, economies in the rest of the World will suffer. Iran already declared to block the Straits of Hormuz and stop up to 30 % of the World’s oil flows. Financial and economic collapse is expected if this would last for longer periods. Understandable that the US want a fast and total surrender or defeat of Iran, as Iran still has this important weapons in its hands.
It is surprising that leaders like President Macron and PM Starmer are openly opposing Israel and the US, aren’t they in the same boat?
