Hagia Sophia, the 1500 years old wonder, an ancient cathedral of huge proportions, built in Istanbul, formerly Byzantium, during the 5th Century.
The recent earthquake in the sea near Istanbul have made it urgent to check and repair the cathedral.
The roof, in particular, an enormous cupola dating from the East Roman Empire time could be at risk and needs a thorough inspection. Therefore, externally and internally, during an open ended renovation period, the cathedral will be covered with protective equipments and scaffolding. Already before, minarets have been taken down, as they seemed in dangerous condition.
The full splendor of Hagia Sophia is expected to resurge only after many years of renovation.
