The President of the EU von der Leyen announced that if Russia does not accept an unconditional ceasefire, the EU will sanction Nord Stream 2 and its Consortium.
Nord Stream 2 is a Swiss company. It is 100% owned by Gazprom/Russia. A consortium of creditors have provided billions of Euros, for the construction of the pipelines, giving the investors, the biggest European energy firms, the right to the gas from Russia, to sell the gas in the European markets.
Von der Leyen demands that Nord Stream 2 shall be unattractive for all investors.
Does she know that she is targeting an investors group close to Donald Trump. Since a year it became known that an experienced investor in Russian distressed assets is looking into Nord Stream 2. This was even brought up in the bilateral discussion between the US and Russia, as the Russian Foreign Minister mentioned it in an interview.
Europe is afraid of US control of cheap Russian gas in cooperation with Russia. The US secured already the pipeline networks in Ukraine in the Minerals Deal, and now is trying to secure the other important direct gas pipeline, Nord Stream 2. This would allow the US to control a significant part of Russian gas coming to Europe, once it is starting to flow again.
