The Ukrainian press reports that Russian President Putin continues to claim that V Selensky occupies illegally the position of President of Ukraine and, therefore, cannot sign any ceasefire or peace deal. Indeed, also in Ukraine it is disputed if Selensky was able to extend his term without a new election during martial law. The Ukrainian Constitution does not say a word about it. That’s true. And it gives lawyers lots of fun to interpret the Constitution. Nb. the Constitution says that the Chairperson of Parliament enters into the function of the State’s President if the latter is disabled/killed/absent/non-existant, but only till the next presidential election. Is it worth to reflect if a deal is legally binding when it is signed by Selensky and the Chairperson of Parliament together?
