During talks in Istanbul this May, the Ukrainian and Russian delegations agreed to put their ceasefire proposals in writing.
News reports confirm that on Monday, May 19, following a call with US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the focus should be finding the most effective ways to move toward peace. Shortly after, Putin announced that Russia is ready to work with Ukraine on a memorandum for a possible future peace agreement.
This Russian memorandum is ready and will be sent to Kiev within days.
The memorandum will outline Russia’s peace conditions. According to Russian government sources it is a take it or leave it situation. Russia offers Ukraine peace and existence under strict conditions or Russia will continue its military operations till the collapse of the Ukrainian army and state. Unfortunately, like many wars have shown it, once a military conflict finds a military end and not a negotiated one, there will be more and even worse atrocities, from both sides, until one side wins on the battlefield, wins totally.
The war in Ukraine started with the violent putsch against a democratically elected president (Yanukovich) whose election was never criticized, but his decision not to follow the EU’s and NATO’s invitations was. The putsch was mastered by Europeans and the US (Obama/Biden). It was the start of the war in the secessionist, predominantly Russian Eastern Ukraine which nationalist Ukrainian forces attacked with immense brutality and where 20’000 Eastern Ukrainians, i.e. historic Russians, were killed between 2014 and 2022. At the same time, Crimea was absorbed by Russia. Between 2014 and 2022 the US and Europe helped to create in Ukraine the largest and best equipped standing army in Europe, ready to attack Russia (and Eastern Ukraine and Crimea) with modern Western weapons. Before the build-up of this Ukrainian army was finalized (and Western intelligence basis, biolabs and other military systems and missiles were stationed), Russia invaded Ukraine with a small force (140’000), not to occupy Ukraine, but to force Ukraine to honor the Minsk Peace Agreements and to stop the build-up of foreign weapons and personal and finally to force Ukraine away from NATO. Ukraine briefly agreed in Istanbul in 2022, but under Western pressure and with many promises, the Ukrainian leadership under V Selensky took up the fight again. Russia blocked off any advance of Ukraine into the Russian Eastern Ukrainian regions and into Crimea and was since then gaining every day territory in Ukraine, while still not employing a massive army and still not launching large, devastsing bombardments killing mainly civilians (like seen in Belgrade or Bagdad).
Since the Obama/Biden era ended with the substantial win of Donald Trump, the war in Ukraine is in its last phase. The US does not want to continue “Biden’s War” and would agree to substantial concessions in favor of Russia. But Europe and the UK have found a new interest in supporting Ukraine and to achieve a victory against Russia, while the US continues to insist on negotiations. Europe seems to sabotage US peace efforts and empowered Selensky to show disrespect to Trump and to reject Russian peace proposals.
The situation has not changed, even in view of Trump’s statement to withdraw totally from Ukraine and from the peace negotiations. Still those favoring the war over peace are pressuring Trump enormously, either from within his own political ranks, or from Europe.
It is therefore, expected that the Russian memorandum will be simply refused by Ukraine as it will be declared that the Russian conditions are inacceptable.
No peace in sight, and a tough future for Ukraine and for Russia, with many more deaths and destruction, suffering. For what? For the geostrategical interest of some European leaders, left-overs from the Obama/Biden era, who have not understood the change of order and interests, mainly in the US. The Project Ukraine has failed and is terminated by Trump – and Ukraine and Europe shall follow his guidance to avoid further harm. In other words: Game over.
