NYT: Trump Urges Trading Ukraine’s Rare Earth Minerals for More U.S. Aid

Taking up an offer which V Selensky made early January, Donald Trump requests from Ukraine a guarantee in form of rare earths for the provision of further US aid in the conflict with Russia.

Trump is about to stop free aid to Ukraine, as a main promise for his reelection. He may provide aid against guarantees and other values.

Ukraine is a rich country in respect of rare earths and huge values are in its grounds and await mining, estimated btw 3 to 11 Trillion USD. But most of the Ukrainian rare earth reserves are located in its southern and eastern regions invaded by Russia. They were up for sale or auction late 2021.

Russia itself has huge reserves which allows Russia to become the 2nd largest producer in the World after China and would easily compete with Ukraine.

Considering the green energy politics in the EU and the important impact of rear earths on associated new technologies and industries, it might have been a real reason for the EU to support Ukraine in the war: a war about resources. Russia’s aim in response may be to get control on the majority of rare earths in Ukraine, to be able to dominate global markets. Terrible, but not new, that people have to die for this.

As it stands today, Ukraine may pledge only a small part of its reserves, the majority situated in the Russian held or targeted areas. Therefore, the pledge may be rather modest. But at least something in return, knowing that Trump blames Selensky for the war and the ongoing dispute about negotiations.
