The NYT reports about Ukrainian forces entering into the Russian province of Belgorod.
This is a new attempt to occupy Russian mainland but very much limited to a few blocks on the Russian border.
The Ukrainian-Russian border is very long and it is almost impossible to guard it against incursions of small fighter groups who act like terrorists and have no other purpose than provoke death and destruction on the Russian side of the border. It is not a realistic argument that the territory that may be occupied in such a raid will become a bargaining chip in peace negotiations with Russia. It has been proven that Russia will march over such intruders.
Therefore, the incursion, as small it is, may serve only for propaganda purposes.
