US Foreign Secretary Rubio and Special Envoy Witkoff met with European and Ukrainian Representatives in Paris today. There was no common statement, no information of anything agreed or discussed.
The French Government just explained that it was “an excellent meeting” and French President Macron said it was “a mobilization of diplomacy”.
Yet, nothing agreed, decided nor told to the public what was really discussed, except “Today, we engaged in a positive and constructive discussion on how to achieve both a ceasefire and a comprehensive, lasting peace,” Macron said. Macron knows that these ‘positive and constructive’ discussions (without Russia) are taking place since March 2022 (even before the Istanbul Agreement).
A follow-up meeting to be expected next week in London. But probably not as high-level as today.
This Paris meeting was an effort without much outcome except that today, after the meeting in Paris, V Selensky in Kiev said that Witkoff is taking Putin’s position and talking points. V Selensky may therefore be a serious obstacle to the US peace efforts.
