The US and Russian negotiators resumed their talks in Saudi Arabia to find a step further to a ceasefire. After the US and Russia agreed, ca. 2 weeks ago, on a partial ceasefire related to energy and infrastructure, the two super-powers now are considering an enlarged ceasefire related to the Black Sea shipping. Nevertheless, it will be a big question under what conditions Russia would agree to a Black Sea ceasefire as it may fear that supplies and support can be shipped easily to Ukraine then. But, as the Russian side said since the beginning of the negotiations, a ceasefire is not an ideal solution for Russia – which is advancing – and Russia will need to find solutions to never again be at risk of a foreign agression from Ukraine (or a bordering country). As Russia says, it needs to root out the caause of the conflict. And this Russian demand seems not well received in Ukraine and by its European supporters – who all demand a “Juste Peace” with some maximalist conditions. It remains a very difficult power play for Donald Trump to get Ukraine and the Europeans in line for Trump’s compromise with Russia. But it is fantastic that Trump already has achieved an inital success and can continue talks with Russia, something that his predecessor Biden and none of the Europeans ever were able to do.
