The BBC reports: ‘Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says is he ready to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin “personally” in Istanbul on Thursday for talks over ending the war.
His post came shortly after Donald Trump demanded Ukraine agree to Putin’s offer of direct talks between the two countries in Turkey.
Trump said: “At least they will be able to determine whether or not a deal is possible, and if it is not, European leaders, and the US, will know where everything stands, and can proceed accordingly” he said, adding: “Have the meeting, now!”
“There is no point in prolonging the killings. And I will be waiting for Putin in Türkiye on Thursday. Personally,” Zelensky wrote.”
It is totally unusual, and a diplomatic no-go, to request, almost to order the leader of an opposing country in a public tweet. President Putin may view this message from V Selensky as offensive – unless Putin has now enough experience with Selensky’s ways of expression.
No doubt that Russia will send a team to Istanbul on Thursday. It is not expected that Putin will join this visit to Istanbul. Turkey is not a member of the ICC/Rome Statute and would not be obliged to arrest Putin under the mandate issued on Selensky’s request.
Selensky will have the pleasure to speak to a Russia team.
