Die Welt, a German paper that is one of the most propagandistic supporters of the war against Russia in Ukraine explains why V Selensky is so fervently refusing to cede territories, in particular, the remaining Donbass areas.
Since 2014, Ukraine has built strong military fortifications around the break away republics in the Donbass. These fortifications are very resistant, full of technology and the reason why Russia did not advance further into Ukraine. In case of a settlement that demands the transfer of those areas, Ukraine would lose its only fortifications belt and Russia would be able to push further easily anytime in the future. As well, Ukraine used these fortifications to shell the populated areas in the Donbass, with a certain safety.
It is not for the territory, but for keeping the military strenght why Ukraine is not willing to transfer the Donbass to Russia.
