The Head of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, proposed an urgent increase of defense spending by EUR 800 billion, with a special fund of EUR 150 billion provided by the EU. Leyen considers it an urgency to increase all EU members’ budgets as, after a possible withdrawal of the US from Europe, EU countries must be prepared to defend Ukraine against Russia alone. The EUR 800 billion suggestion is a direct response to US’ stopping Ukraine aid. It is a defiant reaction and aggressive towards the US and an evidence that Europe intends to continue military aid in place of the US, prolonging the war in Ukraine.
