The Guardian: Germany hits back at US after Vance’s tirade against European leaders … NO, it’s not Germany, it’s Germany’s failed Ampel coalition that’s a cry baby.
The speech of US Vice-President JD Vance in Munich, yesterday, 14 February 2025 was historic. Vance pointed to the European governments’ and the EU’s undemocratic actions, to censorship, to thought crimes, to election annulation, etc. Vance approached these European tendencies in a comparison to the former Soviet Union. This comparison sounds radical and has been immediately slammed the European press and governments. This criticism and Vance’s call to allow all opinions to count in Europe have been, in particular, received with shock in Germany. Vance suggested to Germany to tear down firewalls, in other words to allow the AfD to participate in the political discussions and not to outlaw them or to call them anticonstitutional for their opinion, telling that Germany’s law on hate speech is the instrument to abusively control dissenting opinions. Vance called for the American democratic freedom of speech to be law in Europe. In view of the upcoming elections in Germany, the current Ampel coalition of Greens/Leftists and Chancellor Scholz accused Vance of election meddling, crying foul. “German chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday shot back strongly in defence of his stance against the far-right and said his country will not accept people who “intervene in our democracy,” a day after US vice-president JD Vance scolded European leaders over their approach to democracy.”
