The Guardian: Starmer ready to put British troops on the ground in Ukraine if peace deal reached

At first sight, the declaration of PM Starmer to send troops to Ukraine is not a real commitment as first only a deal with Russia can allow such positioning of troops.
Russia since always said it will not accept NATO troops in Ukraine and will consider them as targets. Therefore, the declaration of Starmer seems not to be relevant in the actual process.
His declaration becomes less relevant when reading that the UK has no money for such a mission and not enough soldiers as the UK army’s personnel is at its lowest since 200 years. The interest in the UK to join the army is also very low and officials are considering introducing obligatory service.
This may reduce PM Starmer’s declaration to a declaration of intent without real possibilities.
PM Starmer repeats an opinion which is now dismissed by President Trump that Russia represents a danger for Europe and is even preparing to attack. While the danger was realistic under Project Ukraine, ie. under the expansion of NATO to Russia’s borders, this danger has disappeared under Trump’s assurance that Project Ukraine is terminated. It may be a negotiating point for Russia to prepare for conditions that there will be never again a Project Ukraine or similar (Georgia, Belarus) so Russia would not need to fear any aggression.
