It has been confirmed by the US Administration that the US and V Selensky discussed that the US would take control of all 4 nuclear power plants in Ukraine, after a peace deal was made with Russia. Selensky contradicting this statement saying that only one nuclear power plant was discussed: Zaporizjia, Europe’s largest nuclear power station which is under Russian control. This power station has been shut down as it was attacked in the conflict: Russian specialists taking care of its security. Zapoiizjia is a Soviet nuclear power station. It was integrated in the Soviet nuclear fuel cycle. Soviet, today Russian know-how and technology will be needed to re-activate and run it. Nuclear fuel will have to be obtained from and recycled in Russia. The Soviet technology is old and needs improvement. While the risk of running such a huge nuclear power station in a country like Ukraine was never really considered, it will be the first thing to do if it was suddenly under US control. The US should reflect about the risks and benefits of operating a Soviet nuclear power plant in a country like Ukraine, with a technology they do not know, in an environment they cannot control. Of the operation life of the Zaporizjia reactors remain ca.10 years. Not only the re-start of the reactors but any future works to extend operation life of the reactors, if possible, will be hugely expensive. Probably it would be better to build a new and modern nuclear power plant with US technology … to avoid a Chernobyl event under US responsibility. The US company Westinghouse has already obtained in 2021 two contracts to build two new reactors at the Khmelnitskyi nuclear power plant. In 2024, Westinghouse obtained the contracts for 2 more reactors at the same plant, totalling an order of USD 5 billion. Thereafter, still in 2024, preparatory works started on new 2 reactors on South Ukraine NPP. The US is, in fact, in full speed building and financing Ukraine’s nuclear power industry despite the war with Russia. As a matter of fact, nuclear power plants have been exempt from the war, only the electrical grid has been attacked, which made it easier to build the new reactors.
