The Guardian reports that President “Putin has agreed to face-to-face talks with V Selensky to discuss a peace deal in Ukraine, according to Donald Trump and European leaders, although Moscow has not confirmed the meeting.”
“Putin, for his part, said he was open to the “idea” of direct talks with Ukraine as he spoke by phone with Trump, according to Russia’s Tass news agency, but there was no confirmation that the meeting would take place.”
But that’s no news at all. Putin was always ready to meet Selensky – when the time is ripe. It seems that Putin considers it is now ok to meet Selensky as the Europeans and Selensky agreed to sign a peace agreement without an unconditional ceasefire, a peace agreement which shall contain Russia’s basic demands for security. But still it’s a long way to go. But still there are discussions in Europe ongoing about Trump’s transfer of territories and the prohibition of NATO presence and membership in and of Ukraine, a presence and membership which Russia will continue to fight.
And that’s the other critical main point: what kind of security guarantees Ukraine will get? NATO membership is excluded. Trump and Putin may allow bilateral security guarantees by each European country in favor of Ukraine.
But will the Europeans dare to go alone? Will their voters agree to be potentially drawn into war with Russia for defending rest-Ukraine? It seems that for this reason all the Europeans came to Washington to urge, to beg Trump for US security guarantees. Each of the Europeans hiding behind the larger of their Ukraine-allies, the mini-supporters France and Italy behind Germany and UK, the louder-supporters Germany and UK behind the US and nobody wants to take a risk with specific guarantees. In such a situation, it is not expected that Ukraine will have meaningful security guarantees, other than an initial investment into new arms.
The main conflict points still are unsettled. The territorial details are either rejected by Ukraine and Europe, the security guarantees remain vague and uncertain. A meeting between Trump, Putin and Selensky is always possible, unless completely unnecessary.
So, that mega-meeting of Trump, Selensky, the European and NATO’s heads of 18 August 2025 produced not many results other than that those loud European war mongers giving way to negotiations without there fantastic pre-conditions.
And the war, the killing the destruction in Ukraine continues, while Ukrainian agents (guided by their sponsors) bring terror to Russia.
