Reuters reports about President Trump confirming that he could agree with President Putin’s mediator role in the conflict between Iran and Israel.
Of course, it is understood that in reality it is a conflict between Israel, US on the one side and Iran on the other side, while Russia has friendly relationships with Iran and was immediately and strongly condemning Israel for the surprise attack on Iran. And to be clear: it is the US that is waging a proxy war against Russia in Ukraine and Russia more intensively is accusing Israel to support Ukraine.
In this complicated context, Trump suggesting Putin to become the mediator between Iran and Israel is rather an invitation to a global settlement of the current conflicts in Ukraine and Iran. The US understands that it will not be able to handle both conflicts:
The Israeli attacks did not show satisfactory results and Iran is retaliating with some success, and a longterm war scenario is feared in the Middle East where the US may be drawn in. It is priority for Trump to avoid such scenario.
As well for the US, Ukraine’s development is rather disappointing. In Ukraine there is also a great risk that the US may be drawn into the conflict and that the US may not remain just the master of the proxy – a role which Europeans are less and less interested to take over. Trump has even less interest in the conflict in Ukraine and just wishes to terminate this Biden initiated mess.
Trump and Putin speaking on the phone more and more regularly recently is a great sign and gives hope for such possible global settlement, including Iran and Ukraine. It seems that Putin has a certain leverage over both situations and can direct the developments in coordination and agreement with Trump, whereas Trump will have to provide “appeasement” of Europe, EU and Israel.
