Trump slaps 50% tariff on all EU imports

The Guardian refers to a Truth Social message of Donald Trump in which he has said he will impose a 50% tariff on all EU imports to the US from 1 June after claiming trade talks between the two trading blocs were “going nowhere”.

The US imposed a 20% tariff on EU goods on 2 April but halved that rate a week later until 8 July to allow time for talks. It has retained 25% import taxes on steel, aluminium and vehicle parts and is threatening similar action on pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and other goods.

Now, Donald Trump, in a surprise message, explains his Frustration with Europe. As response to European non-cooperation, Trump nowhere slaps the EU with a 50% tariff on all goods, per 1st June.

Financial markets in the EU have already responded negatively.

The EU can now take up negotiations with the US Administration which seemingly did not develop since Trump’s Liberation Day, when the US started to introduce reciprocal tariffs.

There may be a connex to Trump’s frustration about the EU to interfere in his peace efforts in Ukraine. Recently, the EU imposed New sanctions on Russia, a move which Trump refutes as contradicting the current peace negotiations.  Indeed, the new EU sanctions are directly harming the US in its pursuite to terminate the war in Ukraine which the EU and some European leaders seemingly wants continue by all means.
