Ukraine ramps up drone attacks on Russia ahead of Trump-Putin Alaska summit

ABC reports that “Ukrainian forces are increasing the intensity of long-range drone strikes deep into Russia, according to data released by Moscow, ahead of Friday’s planned meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska.”

What may the purpose of such increased intensity of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia, in particular, on Moscow and border cities. Russian and other news report direct attacks on populated cities in Russia and on residential building.

The intensity and the targets, as well as the victims seem to be intended and a provocation of a Russia intensiv retaliation just before the Trump-Putin meeting. But Russia did not yet respond to Ukraine’s provocation.

ABC further reports that “thus far in August, the intensity of Russian strikes on Ukraine appear to have eased.”

Russia media reports:” On August 14, 2025, Russian officials reported Ukrainian drone strikes on the border cities of Belgorod and Rostov-on-Don, killing and injuring civilians. Rostov saw an apartment building struck, with over a dozen casualties; in Belgorod, three civilians were hurt when a drone hit a car downtown. This came two days after the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) alleged that Ukrainian forces were preparing a false-flag provocation in the Kharkov region, complete with pre-positioned journalists – supposedly to shape a narrative blaming Moscow.”

ABC is a US mainstream media outlet highly supportive of Ukraine. The admission that Ukraine is increasing and Russia easing aerial attacks is therefore, noteworthy and an excellent sign for Russia’s peace intention. The Russia warnings about potential provocative acts are also important to consider.
