US ‘demands control’ from Ukraine of key pipeline carrying Russian gas – The Guardian

The Guardian’s headline is immediately followed by the statement of an unnamed, anonymous Ukrainian official that the US demand to take control of a gas pipeline amounts “colonialism”.

The Guardian is acting here shamelessly with standard propagandist tools to tell that the demand of the US Administration is colonialism.

The pipeline in question is the largest Soviet built and Russian operated gas pipeline named ‘Brotherhood’. It passes through the town Suzda which was shortly occupied by maroding Ukrainian forces 2024-25 and then destroyed at an important facility station in Suzda.

The pipeline runs through the former Soviet republic of Ukraine and delivered to north and south Europe large quantities of gas. Now it is not working as Ukraine has cut off all gas deliveries to Europe.

The US Administration, also in an attempt to normalize relationships with Russia, wants to take control of the pipeline which should in the future transport Russian gas to Europe again. It is an important energy source for Europe which the US can protect but also take a profit of in view of a reimbursement of costs incurred during the Ukraine conflict.

Within the Minerals Deal, the US is seeking to obtained valuable resources and assets that would allow a reimbursement of US payments and weapons deliveries. Ukraine in response says that all was received for free and opposes to hand over the control of assets. Ukraine may forget that the US could be a valuable investment partner for all these untapped resources and damaged assets which will clearly bring profits to the Ukrainian people – maybe less to the Ukrainian oligarchy.
