The controversial meeting in Paris, yesterday, was indeed about the conditions for peace which the US presented to its European allies and to the Ukrainian representatives.
Bloomberg reports that the US side presented a deal under which
– Russia will keep the occupied territories
– Russia Sanctions will be eased
– Ukraine’s NATO membership is off the table
Now, the reaction of Marco Rubio, the US Foreign Secretary, is understandable as he most certainly faced a “No” from the Europeans and Ukrainians to such peace conditions.
Rubio, after the yesterday’s Paris meeting declared that if peace is not reachable, and this within days, the US will withdraw within days. This amounts to a take-it-or-leave-it situation.
The Europeans and Ukrainians have some time over Easter to reflect and give their answer next week at a meeting in London.
Mixed messages were heard yesterday and today from European and Ukrainian sides concerning security guarantees, peacekeeping forces etc. Still Europe seemingly wants its own boots on the ground in Ukraine. And Ukraine does not want to speak about peace without a full unconditional ceasefire. Considering all these European and Ukrainian demands, it is quiet understandable that Donald Trump expresses his frustration and might blame Europe and Ukraine for failed peace negotiations. It was anyway Biden’s War which Trump wants to end now and the Europeans would better not continue what Biden commenced and directed towards disaster.
