Donald Trump wrote yesterday on social media: “Russia has to get moving. Too many people ere DYING, thousands a week, in a terrible and senseless war.”
US Special Envoy Witkoff arrived for meetings in St Petersburg. Witkoff met with the Russian negotiator Dimitriev first, then with President Putin.
Dimitriev called the meetings productive.
Other high level meetings between Russia and the US are scheduled in Istanbul for the next week.
Donald Trump insists on a rapid ceasefire, the Kremlin has some conditions and seems less interested in a rapid ceasefire as the Russian military action is more and more successful with a Spring offensive about to start. Russia seems confident to produce a factual situation in Ukraine which will be very detrimental to Ukraine’s existence and once the threshold of advance is reached, there will be no return for Russia moving ahead.
Realistically, it is now the moment to make a deal with Russia, fast and what ever it may cost for Ukraine. Even a partition of Ukraine is envisagsble, as Special Envoy Kellogg told the Times yesterday. Such immediate deal will be always better than losing all Ukraine and many more life’s in senseless battles which Ukraine never can win (even with the most sophisticated support of NATO).
