CBS writes that Cardinal “Erdo is considered a traditionalist but is also respected by liberals, which could make him a unifying force within the church.”
The Hungarian candidate is a true Catholic from a true Christian country, where 80% of the population are catholic. He will have to face critics from the left and progressive side, those defending same-sex marriage, mass immigration etc.
Other candidates reviewed either are African or Asian, or of left ideology. There are also candidates from the close network of Pope Francis which always defended the late Pope’s controversial political views.
It seems that the Catholic Church is seeking for a new beginning and will try to get rid off a political influence and ideologies from the Obama/Biden era.
There were many rumors in the Church that Pope Francis was promoted or even installed by Obama, who also may have been involved in the arch-conservative Pope Benedict’s resignation. Benedict was a clear obstacle to Obama’s political ideas.
Needless to say that the US has a powerful word to say in the Vatican – as in Italian politics. The new Trump Administration will certainly be involved in lobbying, like some European leaders. Therefore, Cardinal Erdo will have the best chances.
