NBC already 2019 reported that “after the fall of the Soviet Union, the U.S. Army sharply downsized its short-range anti-air capabilities in the belief that they were no longer greatly needed.”
NBC wrote that oil facilities were under the defensive umbrella of Patriot systems that the U.S. sold to Saudi Arabia to intercept aircraft and missiles up to 100 miles away. However, the Saudis detected 18 low flying drones and missiles too late and a large refinery complex was hit.
Some today’s news is considering Patriot systems as not being sufficiently effective to combat and protect against drones. Drones became a crucial element in aerial attacks on ground targets.
While the US would sell 17 Patriot systems at US 1 billion each to NATO for forwarding the to Ukraine, many questions remain about their usefulness against Russia drone attacks, in particular, against attacks by hundreds of low flying drones.
