Zelenskyy to pull Kyiv out of convention banning anti-personnel landmines

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Selensky signed a decree on June 29 initiating his country’s withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention, the international treaty banning anti-personnel landmines.

Landmines are terrible instruments. Maybe efficient to shield against an attack, but deadly dangerous for civilians when the war is over. For this reason, many countries have signed the Ottawa Convention.

By all means, the Ukrainian conflict is coming to an end. Ukraine was never considered to resist Russia. Only with the help of the Biden Administration and now of some European Governments, Ukraine still keeps fighting against the largely superior Russian army while Russia’s strategy is to progress slowly and to save equipment and personnel.

Ukraine is creating the hell on its territory if it will really use landmines. Hell will not be for the Russian soldiers (who have demineurs), but for the after-war civilians, in particular, children. It’s a shameful decision and a completely cruel abuse of the population in Ukraine.
